A deeply thoughtful, introspective friend of mine recently told me that he views his life as “yeast in the hands of the divine baker.” His metaphorical (and metaphysical) reflection got me thinking…
As I contemplate my own journey of life, I am learning to embrace the unique, highly personalized “family recipe” that makes up who I am, and who I am becoming. I am aware that many of my ingredients came in the box at birth: where/when I was born, to whom, my gender, skin color, hair color, eye color, DNA, blood type, etc. Other ingredients have been added to the mix along the way: experience, education, experimentation, and expertise.
I’ve identified several essential ingredients for my development, including:
Inspiration
Motivation
Perspiration
Implementation
Collaboration
Multiplication
I am embracing the reality that personal growth is much more like a crock pot than a microwave. There’s no instant 5-star meals! If I don’t allow new concepts, ideas, perceptions, perspectives, and even relationships ample time to marinate and cook/bake, they just won’t turn out well, and nobody will be attracted to it or benefit from it. But mixed together in varying quantities and doses, combined with HEAT and TIME produce delicious and nutritious results.
In other words, I must “BAKE it ‘til I make it!”
Jesus Himself reminded his peeps that it only takes a little bit of yeast to leaven an enormous amount of batter. All that is required is a some kneading (work) and time (patience). And when freshly-baked bread comes out of the oven at just the right time, it smells delicious, looks inviting, tastes scrumptious…and there’s more than enough to go around!
The greatness growing IN you isn’t just FOR you.
Bake it ‘til you make it. Enjoy the process. But don’t cook solely for the sake of cooking: SERVE it, and enjoy the satisfaction of seeing others enjoy/benefit/get nourishment. Who knows, you may even save someone from starvation.
